Two big lottery jackpots are growing, and ticket sales are soaring.
Wednesday’s Powerball jackpot is now at $460 million. The drawing will be at 10:59 p.m.
The Powerball jackpot, which has rolled over 19 times, was at $440 million Wednesday morning, but by noon it had quickly increased by $20 million because of strong ticket sales, according to Jennifer Mullen, a spokeswoman for the Virginia Lottery.
Meanwhile, another lottery game has a big, growing jackpot. The Mega Millions jackpot is at $418 million, after no winning ticket was drawn on Tuesday. It was the 23rd time the jackpot for that lottery game has rolled over since October. The next Mega Millions drawing is at 11 p.m. Friday.
With no winners, the jackpots keep rolling over, making the potential winnings — and the ticket sales — grow, grow, grow as even those who don’t normally play daydream and buy tickets on a whim.
Over the years, lottery officials have — in some games — changed how the jackpots are won and changed the range of numbers you can choose. For Powerball, that meant players went from having a 1 in roughly 175 million chance of winning to now having a 1 in roughly 292 million chance.
So, don’t hold your breath on that trip to the Caribbean.
