As if you needed any more movies to add to your queue for summer watching, there’s a new romantic comedy, coming in August, and it’s Daniel Radcliffe’s first. “What If” stars Radcliffe and Adam Driver (“Girls”) and Zoe Kazan (“Ruby Sparks”) — sort of a hipster rom-com like “500 Days of Summer” or “Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist.”
Radcliffe plays Wallace, and Driver is his roommate. Wallace falls in love with his roommate’s cousin, Chantry, played by Kazan. Of course, Chantry has a boyfriend, and this subsequently results in Wallace getting punched in the face. Oh, and there’s a deadline because Chantry gets offered a job in Taiwan. It’s pretty well-worn territory — as plots go, if this one was a pair of shoes, the soles would be nonexistent — but it’s got some good lines.
“In fairy tales, love inspires you to be noble and courageous,” Wallace says. “But in real life, love is just an all-purpose excuse for selfish behavior.”
If nothing else, “What If” should be good for “Harry Potter” fans looking to salivate over the Chosen One himself.
