Police said a mother, father and three children were found dead Sunday in their home near Portland, Maine. The family has not been identified by police.

State police said “all indications are that no one outside of the family was responsible for the deaths,” the Boston Herald reported. They said a gun was found at the scene.

According to the Associated Press, police said a friend of the family called a worker associated with the apartment complex where the family lived to check on the family after growing concerned for them. Police found the bodies in three different rooms. They also found a long gun of some type and shell casings.

Although the family has not been identified, police said the children are believed to be 12, 7, and 4 years of age. The Herald quoted neighbors who said the father was a maintenance worker for the apartment complex where they lived, in Saco, which is about 10 miles from Portland.

“You’d walk and he’d ask how your day was going. He was really nice,” neighbor Kristi Harkins told the Herald.
