Mount Tavurvur erupted in eastern Papua New Guinea on Friday, spewing rocks and ash into the sky.

The Associated Press reported several communities have been evacuated. In a statement, authorities advised residents of the town of Rabaul to stay indoors to avoid falling ash. Some international flights have been diverted, Qantas Airlines told the AP. The ash cloud has altered the flight route between Sydney and Tokyo as well as Sydney and Shanghai.
