This summer, we learned that Pink Floyd would be releasing its first album since 1994’s “The Division Bell,” and the band’s fans rightfully went a little bonkers.
Well, some details have finally emerged about the new work, which is being released Nov. 10 on Columbia Records. Every song on “Endless River” is instrumental, with the exception of “Louder Than Words,” which features lyrics written by novelist and songwriter Polly Samson, who is married to guitarist David Gilmour. The four-sided concept album comes from about 20 hours of music recorded with keyboardist Rick Wright before he died in 2008. You can hear a tiny snippet on the site for “The Endless River.”
“We listened to over 20 hours of the three of us playing together and selected the music we wanted to work on for the new album,” Gilmour said in a statement via Rolling Stone. “Over the last year we’ve added new parts, re-recorded others and generally harnessed studio technology to make a 21st century Pink Floyd album. With Rick gone, and with him the chance of ever doing it again, it feels right that these revisited and reworked tracks should be made available as part of our repertoire.”
“The Endless River is a tribute to Rick,” drummer Nick Mason said in the statement. “I think this record is a good way of recognizing a lot of what he does and how his playing was at the heart of the Pink Floyd sound. Listening back to the sessions, it really brought home to me what a special player he was.”
The cover art is courtesy of a previously unknown Egyptian digital artist Ahmed Emad Eldin, 18. You can see more of his portfolio on Behance.
“When we saw Ahmed’s image it had an instant Floydian resonance.” said Aubrey Powell, who was one half of Hipgnosis, the duo who created so many of the band’s legendary album covers, told the Independent. “It’s enigmatic and open to interpretation, and is the cover that works so well for ‘The Endless River’.”
Storm Thorgerson, Powell’s partner, died last year. After a design agency recreated Eldin’s work, Powell added the finishing touches.
As expected, Roger Waters is absent from the album.
