A British Airways plane en route to Dubai was forced to return to London’s Heathrow Airport when the flight became unbearable for passengers. 

The problem: “smelly poo in the toilet.”

An overflowing toilet was the culprit, but the plane’s crew was unable to fix the problem and the pilot was forced to turn the plane around 30 minutes into the seven-hour flight, according to news reports.

Abhishek Sachdev, who was on the plane, said that he wasn’t near the toilet but that he knew something was amiss when the pilot made an announcement requesting the presence of senior cabin crew, according to the Daily Mail. About 10 minutes later, the pilot made an announcement noting the “pungent smell coming from one of the toilets.”

“He said it was liquid faecal excrement, those are the words he used,” Sachdev, who was traveling with his pregnant wife and their 2-year-old daughter, told the Daily Mail. “He said it’s not a technical fault with the plane, and he was very adamant about that.”

Things only got worse for Sachdev and his family.

Sachdev told the Telegraph that he was disappointed to lose an entire day of his trip.

“You might expect it on some random airline, but you wouldn’t expect it from British Airways,” he said.

The Telegraph reported that an airline spokesman said: “We’re very sorry for the discomfort to our customers. ​We provided them with hotel accommodation and rescheduled the flight to depart the next day.”
