Terry Martin had won money from a lottery scratch-off ticket, Fort Worth police believe.
The prize wasn’t massive — not thousands of dollars, anyway. But the 46-year-old Texas man didn’t want to share it, police say, and that sparked an argument with his girlfriend, a woman he had known since they were children.
The fight apparently led to a fatal confrontation: Authorities told the Star-Telegram that the investigation indicates Martin shot Laurice Hampton on Saturday, then committed suicide.
“We received information that the suspect had won $500 on a Texas lottery scratch-off ticket and that the victim wanted half of the proceeds,” Homicide Sgt. Joe Loughman told the newspaper. “The suspect didn’t want to share it with her.”

According to the Star-Telegram, Loughman said Martin and his 48-year-old girlfriend had a “very volatile relationship.”
Hampton called emergency dispatchers about the incident on Saturday morning.
“She told them that she had been shot and that he had shot himself after he shot her,” Loughman told the Star-Telegram.
Hampton was rushed to a local hospital, where she died, the newspaper reported. Martin was pronounced dead at the scene. Reuters reported that a local medical examiner’s office called Hampton’s death a homicide, and Martin’s a suicide.
