A high school graduation in Augusta, Kan., was interrupted on Sunday by a “knucklehead situation,” police say.

Augusta Police Chief Tyler Brewer told the Wichita Eagle that a 37-year-old man with a concealed carry permit inadvertently caused a small automatic handgun to go off inside his sock during the Augusta High School commencement.

“An individual sitting on the southern portion of the stadium had brought this gun into the stadium,” Brewer said. “It was in his sock. It was uncomfortable for him. He went to adjust his sock, and the weapon went off, striking him in the foot.”

According to the Associated Press, the bullet then traveled 50 feet, hitting a woman in her calf.

She has been released from the hospital, while the man is still being treated for a non-life-threatening injury.

Weapons are not permitted on school grounds, and Brewer said he plans to ask prosecutors to file charges.

The graduation ceremony proceeded after the shooting.
