Some Instagram users are outraged over a bug that has disabled their accounts over the past 24 hours.
The issue first became apparent when users flooded Twitter and Facebook with complaints that they were not able to log into their accounts or that their accounts were deleted entirely.
Some users got messages telling them their accounts were disabled for violations of Instagram’s terms. Others just got shut out for no apparent reason.
The Verge reported no pattern to the problem. “Remain calm, everyone,” the tech blog advised:
From what we can tell, there isn’t an apparent similarity between these accounts to make them targets. One user told The Verge that her Instagram was solely dedicated to her chocolate business, while another said she used it for personal posts. Another user, who owned at least 10 accounts, said some were related to businesses. One user says she had used a third-party app to post content a long time ago while another said she never had.
The Facebook-owned photo and video app has 700 million monthly users, with 59 percent of users between the ages of 18 and 29.
Instagram tweeted that they were working to resolve the bug.
An Instagram spokesperson told BuzzFeed, “the bug logged some users out of their accounts, while also locking their accounts from view. When the bug is fixed and affected users are able to log back in, their accounts will be viewable again.”
Instagram is more than a fun app where people share photos with their friends. In recent years, the app has been a place where users grow and monetize their personal brands. In December, Forbes wrote an article about why “influencer marketing” will explode in 2017, a reference to users, from celebrities to enterprising teenagers, who endorse products for money on social media.
It’s unclear how many users have been affected by the latest “bug.”
