As if Tuesday’s news of Rafael Soriano wasn’t enough, the Nationals announced a handful of relevant minor league news. They formally announced the signings of left-handed relievers Fernando Abad, Bill Bray and Brandon Mann, right-handed starter Ross Ohlendorf and infielder Will Rhymes to minor league deals with invitations to spring training.
The team also announced the invitations to big league camp for minor leaguers, extending offers to left-handed reliever Pat McCoy, right-handed starter Tanner Roark, catcher Carlos Maldonado, first baseman/third baseman Matt Skole and infielder Zach Walters.
Nationals officials are high on Skole and Walters, and longtime minor leaguer Maldonado re-signed to a minor league deal in the winter after being designed for assignment last season. Roark, 26, punched up a 4.39 ERA and a 6-17 record for Class AAA Syracuse last season and is right-handed pitching depth. McCoy, 24, had a 3.70 ERA and a 9.3 K/9 rate as a left-handed reliever over 58 1/3 innings for Class AA Harrisburg.
Also, the Nationals announced the report dates for spring training. Pitchers and catchers report on Feb. 12 and position players on Feb. 15. The first spring training game is a week later on Feb. 23 against the New York Mets in Port St. Lucie.
