Nationals infield prospect Matt Skole was placed on the disabled list today at Class AA Harrisburg with a microfracture in his left wrist, an official familiar with the injury said. Skole, the Nationals’ minor league player of the year in 2012, is considered one of the organization’s top three hitting prospects, alongside Anthony Rendon and Brian Goodwin.

The Nationals have yet to set a specific timetable for Skole’s return. They believe Skole will miss at least three to four weeks because of the microfracture. But they are further evaluating his left arm and running more tests to ensure he did not sustain additional damage.

Skole, 23, sustained the microfracture Friday in a collision at first base during the second game of the minor league season, a day that is may begin to frighten Nationals officials. Last year on the second day of the season, Rendon broke his ankle while rounding third base for Class A Potomac and missed more than half the season.

Last season, Skole hit .291/.426/.559 between Class A Hagerstown and Class A Potomac, playing both third base and first base. Skole impressed Nationals coaches, officials and teammates with his powerful swing this spring training as a non-roster invitee. In one workout, he launched a pitch from Jordan Zimmermann over the fence during live batting practice. “He’s a large animal,” Zimmermann said afterward.
