The Nationals announced Friday the signing of three more draft picks rounding out their top nine selections from this year’s draft. The team signed fourth-rounder Nicholas Pivetta, 11th-rounder John Simms and 12th-rounder Andrew Cooper, all right-handed pitchers, and now has signed 25 of its 39 draft picks from June 8. By agreeing to terms with Pivetta, Washington has signed 13 of its top 14 selections.

The Nationals, with baseball’s smallest draft bonus pool allotment of $2.737 million for picks in the first 10 rounds, finished under budget, according to figures collected by Baseball America. The Nationals have spent only $2.682 million on signing their top nine picks, $55,100 under their allotment.

The Nationals, who incurred a minor penalty last season for going over their allotment, were able to move money around their top nine picks. They inked their top pick, second-round right-hander and 68th overall selection Jake Johansen, to the recommend slot amount of $820,000. They overspent on third-round infielder Drew Ward and lured him from playing college baseball at Oklahoma by handing him a $850,000 bonus, far more than the $491,200 recommend slot for his No. 105 overall selection.

But the Nationals had wiggle room because they inked their fourth, fifth and seventh round picks for just at slot, and signed their sixth round pick for under slot. They also signed their eighth, ninth and 10th round picks for far under slot.
