Tonight’s pitching matchup provides a strong argument for why pitcher wins should not be used as a primary evaluation tool for starters. Trevor Cahill and Gio Gonzalez both have only three wins, but they’ll meet tonight with ERAs of 3.92 and 3.34. Gonzalez hasn’t won since May 5, but he could have won literally every single one of them. He allowed more than two earned runs only once and never more than four while pitching at least 5 2/3 innings in each start. Talk about the game right here.
