Tyler Moore is back. (Jonathan Newton/WP)

The Nationals placed right-handed starter Taylor Jordan on the disabled list with a lower back strain on Saturday afternoon and recalled outfielder-first baseman Tyler Moore from Class AAA Syracuse. The roster move brings back Moore, who has shuffled back and forth between the majors and minors twice already this season, but also throws a wrench in Jordan’s season.

On Friday, in his ninth major league start, Jordan tossed six strong innings despite shoddy defense and three walks. He has punched up a sold 3.66 ERA in 142 innings this season  between the majors and minors. The Nationals were expected to cap Jordan’s season between 135 and 155 innings. Manager Davey Johnson said following Friday’s game that Jordan was expected to make his next start.

Jordan first felt his back discomfort while at the dentist on Wednesday, Johnson had said earlier in the week.

Saturday’s roster moves could be a temporary patchwork. Rosters won’t expand until September and right-handed starter Ross Ohlendorf was expected to return soon. Ohlendorf made his second rehab start on Friday night at Class A Potomac, the expected final one before he rejoins the Nationals. So the team could be adding Moore for four days until Jordan’s spot in the rotation would come up on Wednesday in Chicago. Ohlendorf could slide into that spot.

Moore has been tearing up the International League since he was optioned to Syracuse. Over his last 28 games, he is hitting .371 with a .451 on-base percentage, .676 slugging percentage, seven homers and 31 RBI. With the Nationals, he was hitting .151/.195/.283 in 113 plate appearances and struggled in his second season as a bench player before he was demoted for a second time. With better timing and regular playing time at Syracuse, his hitting improved.

More to come later.
