The Nationals took the first game of Tuesday’s doubleheader in the most improbable of fashion: three runs off dominant closer Craig Kimbrel and a game-ending error by sure-handed shortstop Andrelton Simmons. The win not only ensured that the Braves wouldn’t clinch the NL East in the second game, but moved to the Nationals to 4 1/2 games behind the Reds for the second wild-card spot. Freddy Garcia (4-6, 4.86 ERA) starts for the Braves; his best start of the season was on May 30 for the Orioles when he tossed eight scoreless innings against the Nationals. Washington’s offense, however, has drastically improved since. Rookie Tanner Roark (6-0, 1.30 ERA) starts for the Nationals. The lineups are here. As always, discuss the game here.
