Since our inaugural question-and-answer forum, the Nationals made the biggest decision of their offseason and near future: hiring Matt Williams as their manager. Williams more than held his own at his introductory press conference, presenting a clear idea of how he wants to improve the Nationals and his philosophies. Williams wants to be aggressive on the basepaths and is adding a new coach to the staff who will focus on defense and shifts.
The offseason is still young. Hoping to improve their bullpen, the Nationals have made initial contact with some free agents. They have been linked as potential trade targets for David Price, Max Scherzer and Jeff Samardzija. Long-term extension candidate Ian Desmond was the only Nationals players to win a major award. Should the Nationals lock up Jordan Zimmermann long term as well? Third base coach Trent Jewett and assistant general manager Roy Clark have left the organization for the Mariners and Dodgers, respectively.
