With first baseman Adam LaRoche returning from the disabled list Sunday afternoon, the Nationals optioned utility man Zach Walters to Class AAA Syracuse to make room on their active roster.

The Nationals chose to keep both Tyler Moore and Greg Dobbs, two players who primarily play first base, over Walters, whom Manager Matt Williams wants to receive regular playing time.

“I think he needs some at-bats,” Williams said. “He’s a young player, and he’s been pressed into action here because of the need. So it’s important for him to continue to get at-bats. He did some really good things for us, but it’s good for him to get back down and get some consistent ABs. If there’s a need again, he’s ready, and he’s been getting those.”

Since the Nationals called him up April 13, Walters is 6 for 33 with 14 strikeouts, three walks and three home runs.

Jose Canseco thinks Walters is better than Mike Trout.
