Ryan Zimmerman will serve as the Nationals’ designated hitter for the second straight day. Against left-hander Wei-Yin Chen, Kevin Frandsen will receive a start at second base over Danny Espinosa, who played last night. Espinosa has actually hit left-handers well this season, and his infield defense is the best the Nationals have, but Frandsen gets the nod. And that’s because Nationals Manager Matt Williams is trying to rotate playing time among the reserves.

Frandsen “has played well,” Williams said. “His last couple of at-bats have been good. He got a base hit and he had a nice at-bat the other day. We’re trying to keep that up in any fashion.”

Espinosa has posted an .803 OPS against left-handed pitching this season while Frandsen has a .545 OPS. In his career, however, Frandsen has a .753 OPS against left-handers. Frandsen has had five plate appearances since Bryce Harper returned on June 30.

It’s been a rainy afternoon at Camden Yards, but it seems like the storm clouds should leave in plenty of time for first pitch. Gio Gonzalez will take a 22-inning scoreless streak to the mound against Chen.
