The All-Star Game festivities hummed along Monday in  the bowels of a Hyatt hotel in Minneapolis as manager John Farrell and Mike Matheny unveiled their starting lineups for tomorrow night. Felix Hernandez will square off against Adam Wainwright, and Derek Jeter will bat leadoff for the American League, which is a nice touch. Wainwright said he’d never faced Jeter before, and the moment will be incredibly cool for him.

Matheny also explained, with a dash of vagueness, what led him to choose Nationals reliever Tyler Clippard as a last-minute roster replacement. Once Jordan Zimmermann suffered a biceps strain and couldn’t pitch, Matheny wanted the Nationals to have one player at the game.

“There were a couple Nationals that were not available,” Matheny said. “I really wanted each team to be represented. Tyler was one of the pitchers who’s had an outstanding season and should represent that team.”

Closer Rafael Soriano has an ERA under 1.00 and 22 saves, but he said he would not accept an all-star invitation if chosen after the original roster came out. And so it would be fair to assume Matheny considered Soriano one of those available players.
