Stephen Strasburg is scheduled to pitch Sunday afternoon against the Reds — about an hour and a half from the time this is being written. Interestingly enough, Stephen Strasburg is not currently on the Nationals’ active roster; he’s still on the disabled list with that strained upper back that forced him to miss two starts.
The Nationals will not activate Strasburg until he has successfully completed his warm-ups. No one expects any trouble, but if the Nationals were to activate him, then find he’s unable to throw, that might put their already taxed bullpen in peril. Right-hander Lucas Giolito seems like the likely man to go when Strasburg is activated, though Joe Ross showed some signs of trouble last night that raised questions about his health.
Regardless, the move will be coming soon. The Nationals have until the lineup cards reach the umpires at home plate to make a decision. For now, the Nationals lineup reads as follows:
