WEST PALM BEACH, FLA. – Bryce Harper is a Dallas Cowboys fan and has been for a long time. He’s one of millions across the country. The Cowboys have fans everywhere. But it turns out being one as a high-profile professional athlete offends some Washington sports fans. Not that Harper seems to care much.

Before reporting to spring training, the Nationals right fielder attended WWE Monday Night Raw in Las Vegas, his hometown, wearing a Cowboys snapback cap backwards. On Friday, he reported to camp at The Ballpark of the Palm Beaches with the same cap on. And he’s not going to stop wearing it.

“I wear it every day,” Harper said Saturday. “I’ve always been a Cowboy fan since I was 5 years old. I’m a Duke fan, I’m a Laker fan. I mean, I’m from Vegas, I’ll gamble on the best every single day. That’s what I do.”

Harper also grew  up a Yankees fan. He isn’t the first person to root for traditional winners and he isn’t the first D.C. franchise player to dare continue rooting for the Cowboys despite his place of employment. Last September, Wizards guard John Wall, also a life-long Cowboys fan, wore an Emmitt Smith jersey on the sideline at FedEx Field before a Cowboys-Redskins game. People got mad. Wall didn’t back down.

“I’m not from Washington, D.C.,” Wall said in an interview with CSN Washington. “I’m from Raleigh, North Carolina, and the Cowboys have always been my team. I respect and love every team and cheer for every team and hope every team in Washington, D.C. do well just like they do for us. You can say ‘Well, DeSean Jackson likes this L.A. team, the Lakers.’ Well, he’s from L.A. He’s not from Washington, D.C.; he just plays for the Redskins.”

While we’re here addressing trivial extra-curricular matters, Harper was asked for his thoughts on Mets pitcher Noah Syndergaard, who called Harper a “douche” in an Instagram post on New Year’s Eve.

“I don’t know, Syndergaard does what he does and the Mets do what they do,” Harper said. “So we’re going to worry about what we do in our clubhouse and do everything we can to win ballgames and hopefully have a better record than any team in major league baseball and they’re a great talent over there so we’re going to have some fun this year and hopefully enjoy what we do against them.”
