Around 11 a.m. on Sunday morning, Blake Treinen held up his hands in Stephen Strasburg’s direction, beckoning the starter to toss him the football he’d been holding for a few minutes. Strasburg threw it, so hard that Treinen had to lunge, then politely ask Strasburg to tone it down. Strasburg just laughed, and was out on the field playing catch with a baseball a few minutes later, seemingly no worse for the line-drive comebacker he took off the hip in Saturday’s loss to the Braves.

Nationals General Manager Mike Rizzo said that as far as he can tell, Strasburg is just fine, just like he said he would be after the fact. Asked if the comebacker caused damage that might affect his all-star status or more, Strasburg said simply, “no.” As of noon Sunday, it seems he was correct.

Right-hander Shawn Kelley, meanwhile, threw on flat ground again on Sunday morning, the third time in three days he has done that. Kelley has been out since mid-June with a right trapezius strain, and had been shut down until earlier this week.

Meanwhile, fellow right-handed reliever Koda Glover, who has been on the disabled list since a week before Kelley with what was initially a back injury, then became shoulder inflammation, on Sunday threw on flat ground for the first time since the injury. Glover’s injury, inflammation in the rotator cuff, seemed substantial enough that it might cost him far more than the month he has already missed. But if he is throwing — and the true test of a pitcher’s readiness is not throwing itself, but how he feels the day after — he could begin to ramp up fairly soon. One catch session should not a timetable determine, but that Glover is throwing represents promising progress.

Because the Nationals needed Tanner Roark to relieve Strasburg after that comebacker pushed him from the game, Joe Ross will start Sunday’s game against the Braves.
