U.S. figure skater Jeremy Abbott stands in fifth with two skaters remaining in the men’s short-program portion of figure-skating’s team event, which is being contested for the first time at the Sochi Games.
Abbott, the four-time defending U.S. Champion, fell on his opening quadruple jump, slid into the boards and popped a subsequent jump.
“I’m torn apart that I couldn’t do this for my team and my teammates,” Abbott said after coming off the ice. I love being a part of Team USA, and I’m so honored to be skating with the kids I’m skating with. They really have become like family over the last couple weeks, and I really wanted to pull out a win.”
Opening night of the event continues with the pairs short programs.
After short programs are completed Saturday, the countries with the top five scores advance to Sunday’s finale, when the long programs settle the medals.
