U.S. pairs figure skaters Marissa Castelli and Simon Shnapir saved their season’s best short program for the biggest occasion. Slithering around the ice in clingy black to Santana’s “Black Magic Woman” and “Smooth,” the two-time national champions incited applause from the Iceberg Palace crowd and earned a score of 67.44.

Thatt surpassed their previous season’s best of 64.2, and put them temporarily in second place. However, the favorites were yet to come, headlined by Russian world champions Tatiana Volosozhar and Maxim Trankhov.
