The Slovenians made a huge mistake early in their meeting today with Team Russia. They left Alex Ovechin unchecked coming down the left side. And sure enough, the Capitals’ star and the face of the Sochi Games scored Russia’s first goal with a little more than a minute gone in the game.
Ovechkin then went to his knees and slid into the boards, raising Ted Leonsis’ blood pressure considerably, but got up and celebrated in Ovechkin fashion. And the crowd, not surprisingly, went nuts.
Evgeni Malkin had the assist on Ovechkin’s goal, then Ovechkin assisted on Malkin’s goal. Just like that, 2-0.
On their second shift, the Ovi/Malkin/Semin line does it again. Goal for Malkin. 2-0, Russia, four minutes in.— Dave Sheinin (@DaveSheinin) February 13, 2014
