Chatter erupted on the Norwegian Olympic Curling Team’s Pants’ Facebook page (yes, that exists) after Norwegian television declared an official “Buksekrise,” aka “trouser crisis” on Monday night, just hours before the Norwegian men were to face Great Britain in a tiebreaker match with a semifinal spot at stake. #SochiProblems, indeed.
The team only brought nine pairs of wildly patterned curling trousers, with the idea being to have a different pair of pants for each of the nine teams they faced during the round robin competition, NRK-TV said.
But with the unexpected tiebreaker — the Norwegians, who won silver at the 2010 Vancouver Games, were expected to sail through the round-robin competition — the team had a big decision to make. WHICH PANTS TO REPEAT?!
The decision, reports NRK-TV, was going to be left up to the team’s “fashion coordinator” Christoffer Svae, who is also a curler, and gave only one hint: They will have to be a pair that the team has previously won in while wearing.
Well, at midnight EST, Svae’s big decision was revealed when the Norwegians walked out in the same pants they wore Feb. 11, when they won, 9-8, over Russia. Would these paint-splattered masterpieces bring similar success?
Alas, no. The Buksekrise proved too much to overcome. The Norwegians lost to the British, 6-5, and now they — and their beloved pants — are officially out of this Olympic competition.
