Updated 1:20 p.m.: Meghan Duggan scored for the United States nearly 12 minutes into the second period to break a scoreless tie in the women’s hockey gold medal game. Duggan flicked a wrist shot past a screen and into the top corner of the net.

There were five penalties but no goals in what was a very chippy first period of the United States-Canada gold medal women’s hockey game. With so many power plays (Canada committed three of the penalties), there were plenty of scoring opportunities, but Canada’s Shannon Szabados and the U.S.’s Jessie Vetter were stellar in goal.

Live summary: U.S. vs. Canada

The U.S. outshot Canada, 11-9, in the period. None of the penalties were cheap calls. These two teams have a long, deep history of great games and animosity, most recently in a 3-2 Canada win in the preliminary round of the tournament.
