Eric Greitens elected as Missouri governor

Republican Eric Greitens has beaten Chris Koster, a Democrat, in the race to be governor of Missouri.

Greitens is a former Navy SEAL and philanthropist who scored an upset win in the state’s Republican primary. He styles himself as a “conservative outsider,” inspired at last to enter public service because of what he calls incumbent Democratic Gov. Jay Nixon’s meandering response to the unrest in Ferguson.

Koster, a moderate Republican legislator until 2007, is Missouri's attorney general. He calls himself a “conservative Democrat, not a moderate Democrat,” who worries what politics would look like if the two parties settled into concrete on the right and left.

Missouri voted for Republican businessman Donald Trump in Tuesday’s presidential election.
