Gov. Kate Brown elected as Oregon governor

Democrat Kate Brown has beaten Bud Pierce, a Republican, in the race to be governor of Oregon.

Brown is Oregon's second female governor and the first openly bisexual governor in U.S. history. In February 2015, she was Oregon's secretary of state when she succeeded Gov. John Kitzhaber (D), who resigned amid a public corruption scandal involving him and his fiancee just one month after he was sworn into a historic fourth term in office.

Pierce, an oncologist, made headlines when he said in a debate that educated women are less susceptible to domestic abuse.

Oregon voted for Hillary Clinton, the Democratic former secretary of state, in Tuesday’s presidential election.
