Gov. Gary R. Herbert elected as Utah governor

Republican Gary R. Herbert has beaten Mike Weinholtz, a Democrat, in the race to be governor of Utah.

Herbert served as lieutenant governor before becoming governor in 2009. He's one of the Utah Republican politicians who have said they won't vote for Donald Trump.

Weinholtz is a wealthy businessman who drew attention in October when his wife pleaded guilty to misdemeanor pot-possession charges. He pushed for the legalization of medical marijuana.

Utah voted for Republican businessman Donald Trump in Tuesday’s presidential election.
