Phil Scott elected as Vermont governor

Republican Phil Scott has beaten Sue Minter, a Democrat, in the race to be governor of Vermont.

Scott has been serving as lieutenant governor under Gov. Peter Shumlin (D), who is retiring. The top two executive offices in the state can be held by people from different parties.

Minter is the state's transportation secretary and led Vermont's recovery after Tropical Storm Irene in 2011.

Vermont voted for Hillary Clinton, the Democratic former secretary of state, in Tuesday’s presidential election.
