On Twitter on Tuesday, Trump responded to a “Fox and Friends” segment about vacant administration positions by again claiming that he was leaving them empty intentionally.

In February, we asked the president which of the still-open jobs at that point were unimportant. Below, that list — with the jobs that have been filled since indicated with a strike-through.

President Trump had a simple explanation when Fox News’s Brian Kilmeade asked him why he hadn’t filled a number of open administration positions: He didn’t want to.

KILMEADE: You have 600 open jobs, though, that you can appoint. What’s going on …

TRUMP: Well, a lot of those jobs, I don’t want to appoint, because they’re unnecessary to have. You know, we have so many people in government, even me, I look at some of the jobs and it’s people over people over people. I say what do all these people do? You don’t need all those jobs.

KILMEADE: So you’re cut — you’re cutting …

TRUMP: Oh, we’re cutting …

KILMEADE: Those slots are not going to be there?

TRUMP: You know, it’s funny. That’s what I mean about messaging. “You have to fill hundreds of jobs” …

KILMEADE: We had no idea that you didn’t want to fill them.

TRUMP: Oh, many of those jobs I don’t want to fill. I say isn’t that a good thing? That’s not a bad thing. That’s a good thing. We’re running a very good, efficient government.

This is very on-brand for Trump. He’s the “you’re fired” guy, sent to Washington to knock heads and clean house. It’s not that Trump and his team are slow to ensure key government positions are staffed, he would argue, it’s that these hundreds of jobs are just waste.

The argument mirrors Trump’s argument on cutting funding for the arts, money that makes up 0.02 percent of the federal government. Cutting 600 positions would mean that Trump is clearing out 0.0002 percent of the federal workforce. Put another way: almost none of it.

With many top-tier posts still empty in President Trump's new government, cabinet secretaries are getting exasperated with the lack of senior-level staff in their agencies. (Jenny Starrs/The Washington Post)

One problem with Trump’s admittedly clever spin on these positions is that it’s not like he’s suggesting the government cut 600 random jobs in distant, bloated government offices. The hundreds of jobs that are at stake are ones that require Senate approval, some 515 of which remain unfilled, according to a tool tracking those appointments that The Post developed with the Partnership for Public Service.

What are they? Well, here’s a list. We’ve gone ahead and bolded the ones that seem particularly important — particularly for Trump.
