The county police had asked for help in responding to the looting, which occurred over several hours on Sunday. Officers from the city of St. Louis as well as the Missouri Highway Patrol arrived at the scene shortly after 11 p.m. on Sunday, with the St. Louis officers leaving Ferguson shortly before 3 a.m.
About 300 officers responded to the chaotic scene on Sunday, Schellman said. In addition, two police officers sustained minor, non-life-threatening injuries, he said.
By Monday morning, the sites where rioting occurred were covered with graffiti, broken glass and other debris.
