The memorial on Canfield Drive that was destroyed was located near the spot where Brown was shot and killed by Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson last month.
It was not the primary memorial, which sits in the middle of the street. That larger memorial was not burned or damaged. People were less than thrilled to see this memorial destroyed, as you might imagine:
And video captured Tuesday showed the fire burning, with officers also visible in the footage:
Residents in the area were suspicious about the cause of the fire, which they said could not have been accidental:
Tom Jackson, the chief of Ferguson’s police department, said in a statement that police are working to figure out what happened.
“To anyone who believes we didn’t do everything in our power to put this fire out I want to apologize and let you know that was not the case,” he said.
Jackson said that the first officer on the scene tried to put out the fire but was unsuccessful. He also said that only some of the city’s police cars have fire extinguishers.
Within hours of the fire, residents had begun putting the memorial back together. (You can see the other memorial in the background of this photo.)
