Two people were reported shot — one fatally — at a federal building in Manhattan on Friday evening.

A New York Police Department spokesman confirmed shortly before 6 p.m. that there was an “active shooting situation” and that one person had died at Varick and Houston streets, but no further details were immediately released.

Josh Sternberg, a content strategist at The Washington Post, reported that plainclothes officers in bulletproof vests were directing traffic near the scene. Ambulances were dispatched and helicopters were seen flying low overhead.

CBS New York reported that a man who walked into the building at 5.19 p.m. shot and wounded a security officer before taking his own life.

The security guard was taken to Bellevue Hospital Center, according to the report.

The incident took place at 201 Varick St., which houses an immigration court and a U.S. post office.

A gunman entered a federal building in Lower Manhattan on Friday and fatally shot a security guard and injured another before turning the gun on himself, according to authorities. (Reuters)
