The presumptive GOP presidential nominee said in a statement: “As I said yesterday, Todd Akin's comments were offensive and wrong and he should very seriously consider what course would be in the best interest of our country.  Today, his fellow Missourians urged him to step aside, and I think he should accept their counsel and exit the Senate race.”

Clearly Republicans are ramping up the public pressure on the Missouri congressman to withdraw, but Akin's interview with Mike Huckabee today suggests that establishment opposition is only making Akin more determined to see this thing through. The urging of conservative leaders has been no more persuasive.

“We believe taking this stand is going to strengthen our country — going to strengthen, ultimately, the Republican Party,” Akin said. "What we’re seeing right now is a tremendous outpouring of support from just regular small people."
