A 21-page plan, released by the Romney campaign, details how the GOP candidate hopes to achieve what "every president since Nixon has tried and failed to achieve:" energy independence. The plan, which relies heavily on oil and coal, would:
- Open new areas for offshore oil drilling, starting in Virginia and the Carolinas,
- Empower the states to lease federal lands for oil, coal and natural gas development,
- Remove or loosen environmental statutes and regulations to greenlight more coal production and other industry priorities, and
- Reach agreements for energy production with Canada and Mexico, including the building of the Keystone XL Pipeline.
