Democrats were scheduled to host a news conference in Tampa on Wednesday morning aimed at criticizing Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) ahead of the vice presidential nominee's speech late Wednesday. Among the names listed on the advisory for the event? Tom Barrett, the Democratic mayor of Milwaukee who lost to Republican Gov. Scott Walker in a June recall election.

One the one hand, it appears to make sense for Democrats to include Barrett. He is, after all, from Ryan's home state, and knows the congressman's record better than a lot of other Democratic surrogates. But he is also associated in the minds of many with the disappointing defeat Democrats suffered against Walker not quite three months ago.
