Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.), the civil rights movement icon who endorsed President Obama in his 2008 Democratic primary campaign after first backing Hillary Clinton, used his convention speech to encourage Democrats to understand the value of their vote and "march to the polls like never ever before."

"I first came to this city in 1961, the year Barack Obama was born. I was one of the original 13 Freedom Riders," Lewis said.

"We are a different society than we were in 1961," he added.
