Romney shifts tone in USA Today op-ed

In a USA Today op-ed, Mitt Romney recasts his economic philosophy as one that would lift poorer Americans out of dependency.

"My course for the American economy will encourage private investment and personal freedom," Romney writes. "Instead of creating a web of dependency, I will pursue policies that grow our economy and lift Americans out of poverty."

While he doesn't mention the comments he made at a Florida fundraiser earlier this year, Romney is clearly trying to downplay his claim that he could "never convince" the 47 percent of Americans who don't pay federal income tax  that "they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives." Numerous conservatives have pushed back on that argument, saying that they aim to help everyone succeed.

The Post's Philip Bump says ...
Since he proclaimed that he'd win New Hampshire last summer, Bernie Sanders has seen a swing of about 50 points in his direction. Impressive. But not as impressive as the guy on the other side of the political aisle. Donald Trump has led the Republican field in New Hampshire for almost 200 days, and has held a lead in 51 straight live-caller polls -- every poll stretching back to last July.
