Sen. Scott Brown (R-Mass.) was defeated by challenger Elizabeth Warren (D) in one of the most expensive and high-profile races of the cycle.
Brown took his seat in a 2010 special election, replacing the late Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, a liberal icon. Despite the Bay State's overwhelmingly Democratic electorate, Brown's personal likability and success in branding himself as a down-to-earth independent made this a tough race. But Warren successfully tied Brown to the national GOP brand while beating back attacks on her character. Polls in recent weeks gave her the edge.
Warren is a favorite of Democrats across the country -- a status that helped her raise huge sums of money -- and so talk of a future presidential run begins tonight.
