President Obama welcomed congressional leadership to the White House on Friday morning to begin discussing ways to avert the so-called "fiscal cliff," but he also made time to wish House Speaker John Boehner (Ohio) an early happy birthday and poke a little fun at him, too.

The president at one point turned to Boehner with a big smile and said he had one more announcement to make today, which is to wish the speaker a happy birthday, The Post's Amy Gardner wrote in a pool report. "We didn't make him a cake because we didn't know how many candles we'd need," Obama said.

The two laughed and shook hands, and Boehner said, "Yeah, right."

If you're keeping track, Saturday is Boehner's 63rd birthday.
