President Obama and House Speaker John A. Boehner (R-Ohio) spoke by telephone Wednesday evening to discuss the path forward on negotiations to avoid the year-end fiscal cliff.

It was their first conversation since last Wednesday, when Boehner called Obama and the two had a 28-minute conversation that Boehner described as direct and frank. Since then, the two sides have exchanged deficit reduction packages that each dismissed as non-starters. Wednesday's call is the first sign of movement this week.
