White House press secretary Jay Carney said during Tuesday's briefing that President Obama supports legislation Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) plans to introduce early in the 113th Congress that would reinstate a ban on assault weapons.

That's a more specific position than the White House offered Monday, when Carney said Obama supports a ban on assault weapons, but did not detail specific measures he would take to put one in place.

Obama has asked his administration to attempt to reduce gun violence, directing Cabinet members to formulate a set of proposals that could include reinstating a ban on assault rifles.
