House GOP leaders told their members in a just-concluded closed meeting that they will count votes to gauge support for an amendment to the Senate's fiscal cliff deal that would cut additional spending.

But leaders said if they do not have the votes to pass the amended bill, they will move forward the bill adopted by the Senate early Monday without changes. Leaders warned members that if they do amend the bill, they risk the Senate refusing to take it up -- leaving the nation hanging. Members said they expect to vote as early as tonight.
