White House Press Secretary Jay Carney appeared to have little interest Wednesday in weighing in on the debate over whether singer Beyonce was lip-syncing when she sang the national anthem at President Obama’s second inauguration.

Noting that he has “no idea” what’s true on the matter given that what’s been reported thus far has been inconsistent, he referred reporters to the Presidential Inaugural Committee and the joint congressional panel that handles the inaugural ceremonies.

“As powerful as this office is, we don’t control the weather,” he said, noting that pre-recordings were made as a precaution, just as they were for the 2009 inauguration.

In response to several more questions on the issue, Carney deadpanned, “I’m glad you guys are focused on the important issues of the day here.”

A spokesman for the Marine Corps band has said that the music accompanying Beyonce was pre-recorded. But he could not say whether Beyonce was lip-syncing or actually singing, referring reporters to the Presidential Inaugural Committee and the singer herself.
