Armed Services to vote on Hagel on Tuesday

Senate Armed Services Committee chairman Carl Levin (D-Mich.) announced that he plans to hold a vote Tuesday on Chuck Hagel's nomination to become defense secretary.

Levin postponed the committee vote on Hagel last Thursday as Republicans complained that there was not enough information on Hagel's income from paid speeches and recent business dealings to proceed. Levin responded to those demands Friday, saying the financial disclosure information Hagel provided was sufficient.

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) said in a statement Monday that he believed Hagel had "fulfilled the rigorous requirements" for nominees and agreed with Levin's decision to hold a vote.

"I believe it is appropriate for the Armed Services Committee to vote on Senator Hagel’s nomination and determine whether to move this nomination to the Senate floor where Members can debate and express their own judgments," said McCain, who still expressed reservations about Hagel's nomination.

Hagel, a former Republican senator from Nebraska, appears to have enough support from Democrats to be confirmed, but faces opposition from his former GOP colleagues. Sen. Lindsay O. Graham (R-S.C.) has said he may hold up Hagel's nomination until the Obama administration offers more details on the Sept. 11 attack on a U.S. diplomatic outpost in Benghazi.

Levin will request the vote during a 2:30 p.m. meeting Tuesday, just a few hours before President Obama's State of the Union address.
