The controversial comments made by Rep. Todd Akin (R-Mo.) during last year's Missouri Senate election have been enshrined in popular culture. NBC's "Law and Order: SVU" is airing an episode Wednesday night entitled "Legitimate Rape."
In a preview for the episode, a middle-aged white man wearing a flag pin testifies that "it's nearly impossible for a victim of legitimate rape to become pregnant" -- an echo of Akin's claim that "if it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down."
Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.), who defeated Akin in that race, deemed the tribute "surreal."

The senator is working on a book about the race. In a recent interview she argued that she would have defeated Akin even if he hadn't weighed in on pregnancy and rape. “You wouldn't believe the number of things that he said, that we had in the can,” McCaskill said.
