South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley (R) is appearing at a fundraiser for her predecessor and former mentor -- embattled 1st district House candidate Mark Sanford.
Haley is a "special guest" at Wednesday evening's event, according to an invitation first obtained by the blog GOPwrite.com. Tickets to the reception cost $250; sponsorship costs at least $1,000.
Haley endorsed Sanford in the May 7 special election early this month, through a spokesman. Her support came after Sanford won a Republican primary runoff with Curtis Bostic,.
The governor was a major supporter of Sanford's when he held her post and she served in the state legislature. He helped persuade her to run for governor in 2010. As a candidate in 2009 when Sanford's marital scandal broke and travel was investigated, Haley distanced herself. But a group affiliated with Sanford still paid for pro-Haley ads, and the governor attended her victory party. His then-wife, Jenny Sanford, was also an early Haley supporter.
The 1st district's Republican lean favors Sanford, but his personal foibles -- among other things, he's accused of trespassing on his ex-wife's property -- have made the race competitive for Democrat Elizabeth Colbert Busch. While Haley has struggled in polls herself, her support has grown in recent months -- particularly among Republicans.
