Delaware is the the 11th state to endorse gay marriage after a bill legalizing same-sex unions passed the state Senate on a 12 to 9 vote. (The District of Columbia has also legalized gay marriage.)
The bill passed the state House in a narrow vote last month and was signed Tuesday afternoon by Gov. Jack Markell (D).
The legislation takes effect on July 1. Civil unions, legalized by Delaware in 2011, will cease to exist once gay marriage is legal. Existing civil unions will be converted to marriages by July, 2014.
